Abstract
This study is carried out to evaluate the correlation between serum HDL-C concentration and liver diseases in 270 adult patients admitted to a hospital by measuring total protein, albumin, total bilirubin, TTT, AST, ALT, ALP, LDH, r-GTP, total cholesterol, TG and HDL-C.
It was hypothesized that the HDL-C concentration may be sensitive enough to reflect the liver function and to be used as one of indices.
The following findings were obtained from the study.
1. HDL-C levels showed statistically significant positive correlation to the levels of albumin in chronic active hepatitis, to the total cholesterol values in chronic inactive hepatitis and to the total protein levels in hepatoma. -
2. HDL-C have shown negative correlation with r-GTP activities in the initial stage of acute viral hepatitis and with ALP activities in alcoholic hepatitis.
3. Most of the patients with hepatobiliary diseases had decreased HDL-C levels and It was most striking in the initial stage of acute viral hepatitis, in chronic active hepatitis and in cholecystitis (P. less than 0.001).
On the basis of this study, it would be recommended that the levels of HDL-C could be used as routine screening method for early detection of hepatobiliary diseases and an index of evaluating the prognosis of the liver diseases.
